When the Laboratory Challenges Nature

The diamond market is undergoing a major transformation with the rise of lab-grown diamonds, produced through technologies such as High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) synthesis or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

Chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds, these stones are emerging as a new market segment. Introduced around a decade ago, lab-grown diamonds now directly compete with natural diamonds by offering alternatives that are more accessible, ethical and sustainable

A New Market Segment: Opportunity and Challenge

Lab-grown diamonds are no longer a niche. They are reshaping the luxury landscape, making it more inclusive and responsible, while compelling natural diamonds to reposition themselves around notions of rarity, heritage and uniqueness.

With a rapidly growing market share, this segment promises intense competition as well as hybrid approaches: 40% of consumers now consider combining both lab-grown and natural diamonds.

Lab-grown diamonds are already transforming the market, accounting for nearly 20% of global diamond sales, though their value is declining due to overproduction. Natural diamonds, rarer by nature, may regain value within the heritage and investment segment. Ultimately, the future of diamonds will be defined less by their origin than by the meaning and value each individual chooses to attribute to them.
